I often test my clients for their gut health and food sensitivities and frequently they tell me “But I don’t have any food allergies”. This is likely correct as true food “allergies” are normally obvious, the response to the food allergen is rapid and immediate with symptoms such as hives, itching, shortness of breath or in severe cases anaphylaxis. To be tested for food allergies you should go to a medical professional for the tests they offer, usually a skin test. However, food “sensitivities” are much less obvious as you will read below, and it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact food that maybe causing inflammatory responses. This is why I like to test, because then we know, for each client, the exact foods that may be contributing to their symptoms rather than randomly asking them to remove all foods that are known to be inflammatory. Using testing makes a protocol much more targeted and effective.
Read below for a better understanding of why food sensitivities maybe part of the reason you are not achieving your health goals.
Food sensitivities are more than a minor inconvenience—they can play a major role in your overall health, affecting everything from digestion to mood. Recent research highlights the importance of gut health, particularly the concept of "leaky gut," in the development of food sensitivities and chronic symptoms. Here’s what you need to know and how addressing these issues can transform your wellbeing.
What Are Food Sensitivities?
Unlike food allergies, which provoke immediate and often severe reactions, food sensitivities typically cause subtle, chronic symptoms that can go undiagnosed for years. Common symptoms include:
Digestive issues: bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and stomach pain
Skin problems: eczema, rashes, hives, and itching
Headaches and migraines
Chronic fatigue and low energy
Joint pain and muscle aches
Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
These symptoms can persist and worsen over time if trigger foods remain in your diet.
The Hidden Impact on Mental and Emotional Health
Food sensitivities don’t just affect the body—they can also hijack your mental wellbeing:
Mood swings, anxiety, and depression
Chronic discomfort leading to irritability and low motivation
Social withdrawal due to the stress of managing symptoms and avoiding certain foods
The cumulative effect can significantly reduce your quality of life, impacting work, relationships, and daily activities.
Why Are Food Sensitivities Often Overlooked?
Symptoms are often delayed and non-specific, making them hard to trace to a particular food.
Many people attribute their symptoms to stress, aging, or unrelated health issues.
Food sensitivities are largely undiagnosed, so many continue to suffer without realizing the cause.
The Role of Leaky Gut in Food Sensitivities
What Is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut, or increased intestinal permeability, occurs when the lining of your gut becomes compromised. This allows undigested food particles, toxins, and microbes to pass into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and immune responses.
How Leaky Gut Contributes to Sensitivities
Barrier Dysfunction: When the gut barrier is disrupted, larger food particles can cross into the bloodstream, potentially triggering immune responses and food sensitivities.
Chronic Inflammation: Disrupted barrier function leads to low-grade, chronic inflammation, which is linked to metabolic, autoimmune, and even neuropsychiatric disorders.
Gut-Brain Axis: Changes in the microbiome and gut barrier can influence mood, cognition, and emotional wellbeing.
How Addressing Leaky Gut Can Enhance Your Wellbeing
Addressing a food sensitivities, leaky gut and microbiome imbalance can be the key to your improved wellbeing. You could:
· Reduce reactions to foods and develop fewer sensitivities with improved barrier function
· Lower systemic and gut inflammation and improve protection against disease
· Achieve relief from GI symptoms and have better nutrient absorption
· Improve mood, have less brain fog, reduce anxiety and depression
· Balance immune responses and have fewer infections/allergies
Evidence-Based Strategies for Gut Barrier Restoration
Eliminate Trigger Foods: Identify and remove the foods that your body is reacting to. Using the MRT test I can help you identify common foods or chemicals that your immune system may be reactive to and develop a nutrition plan to support the removal of these foods for a specific period of time and improve the integrity of your GI tract.
Eat Gut-Healing Foods: Incorporate bone broth, fermented food, leafy greens, berries, and healthy fats. Again, the MRT test can identify which of these may be best for you.
Use Probiotics and Prebiotics: Support a healthy gut microbiome with beneficial bacteria and the fibers that feed them.
Manage Stress: Practice meditation, exercise, and get adequate sleep to support gut repair.
Avoid Harmful Medications and Toxins: Limit use of NSAIDs, antibiotics, and exposure to environmental toxins that can damage the gut lining.
Key Takeaways
Food sensitivities and leaky gut are closely linked—addressing gut health can significantly reduce symptoms and improve your overall wellbeing.
Scientific research supports the role of gut barrier integrity in reducing inflammation, enhancing mental health, and supporting immune balance.
Diet, lifestyle, and targeted supplements are powerful tools for healing the gut and reclaiming your health.
