🌿 My Early Health Journey

My path toward holistic nutrition has been shaped by a lifetime of health changes, both my own and those of loved ones.

As a baby, I struggled with severe reactions to formula, causing constant stomach pain and distress. This set the stage for childhood frequent illnesses, including recurrent bouts of strep throat and repeated antibiotic use culiminating in the removal of my tonsils and adenoids which then caused me to hemorrhage.

There was no thought given to root causes of my illness and why these important parts of my immune system were sending warning signals.

Growing up I faced ongoing digestive issues, severe gas and bloating, mouth ulcers (canker sores) and anxiety. Like most people then, I ate a typical diet that included processed food with little understanding how food and lifestyle impacted my wellbeing.

🌱 Turning Points and New Questions

In my mid-twenties, while backpacking through Asia, I had multiple bouts of foodborne illness and more heavy doses of antibiotics that worsened my gut health.

Finally, after moving to America with three young children, I was diagnosed with GERD, IBS and a haital hernia and prescribed acid-blocking medication for over a decade. Again, there was no discussion from the doctor about diet, lifestyle or the significant long- term consequences for my future health.

In 2005, one of my daughters was diagnosed with leukemia at age 5. I began to ask about nutrition and lifestyle factors that could have a) contributed to her diagnosis and b) could help support her journey to survival. I was simply told to focus on giving her enough calories with no concern for the quality or source. Six months later I had my own breast- health scare leading to surgery and 5 years of medication.

At this point, I realized that diet, stress, toxin exposures and many other lifestyle factors had played a crucial role in our health journeys. But, with three young children, one with cancer and a husband who had to travel a lot for work, I didn't have the resources to dig deeper at that time; however, the seed was planted.

🌸 Finding Purpose and a New Path

These experiences, along with some health issues my Mum had back in the UK, fueled my commitment to understanding the connection between nutrition, exercise, mental health and overall wellbeing.

As my children grew and my daughter reached important cancer survivor milestones, I volunteered in the community. I provided healthy meals for Staff Appreciation at the middle and high schools and helped establish mental health programs for the students within the high school district. My girls and I cooked and served meals to families in need and provided healthy snack packs for families at Children's Hospital Oakland. We also all took part in Olympic distance triathlons to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

When my youngest prepared to leave for university, I knew it was time to invest in myself. I enrolled in Bauman College to become a Certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant and graduated with honors.

Though the pandemic delayed my plans, it also led me to advanced training in functional testing and personalized nutrition with Restorative Wellness Solutions. As a Level 3 (out of 4 levels) practitioner I have learned how stress, sleep, toxins, exercise and so much more all work together and appreciate how each of us are so uniquely individual that a one-size-fits-all approach simply does not work to truly support someone to bring balance and health back to their lives.

I have also practiced what I preach! Following my own restorative protocol, I no longer have GERD or take antacids, I don't have IBS symptoms, bloating, excessive gas and haven't had a canker sore in years. Mindfulness, gratitude, self-compassion, movement and nourishing food have helped me feel more resilient and joyful.

I now have the energy to follow my passion- which is to continue to help others so they have the vigor and vibrancy they need to follow whatever they desire in the next phase of their lives.
